1. Una nueva tele… qué mejor que la Samsung UE40D5500 LED 40″ Full HD 100 Hz Ultraslim, 40 pulgadas y LED… (599€, todo un chollo!)

2. Un móvil nuevo… el mío está un poco destrozado y el nuevo Samsung Google Nexus S pinta muy bien (sólo 479€)

3. Mi Nikon D7000 pide a gritos un buen flash y este Nikon Flash SB700 está bastante bien (por 352,47€)

4. Una vez más, ya que el año pasado no me la regalásteis… una Sony NEX-5 +18-55 mm Negro Cámara Digital Híbrida, con una calidad excelente y el tamaño de una compacta, para esos momentos en los que no quiero llevar la réflex encima (479€ no es nada!)

5. Un trípode para mi réflex (y mi híbrida si me la traéis), este Manfrotto MK393-H Trípode+Rotula me encanta! (muy bien de precio, 99€)

Me he portado muy bien, y todo ello cuesta 2008,47€, menos de 2012€, este nuevo año!!

El sábado decidimos ir en bici en buscase una tienda de deporte para comprar un chándal, que comienza a hacer frío y el jueves empiezo taichi. Entre pitos y flautas acabamos recorriendo 20km en nuestras flamantes bicis (lo cual no es pan comido). Buscando el Decathlon llegamos a un centro comercial con tiendas del tamaño de una mini habitación y pasillos de un piso del centro de Madrid. En él tenían de todo y muy barato. Los súper osos de peluche del tamaño de una persona costaban menos de 10€.

Así que tras el paseo en bici, una vez hecha la compra, voy a la cama, que hoy me levantaba a las 6:30 para asistir a una conferencia sobre MRI, la HIMIC, muy importante. Menos mal que venía al hotel donde se celebra con mis compañeros de labo, porque el taxista ser ha perdido unas cuantas veces… Las conferencias han estado muy bien, sobretodo las que daban americanos o japoneses, porque ha habido chinos que la daban en chino y una traductora intentaba ayudarnos a entender lo que decían; pero al no ser una experta del sector no conseguía expresar bien lo explicado. Un día muy productivo, pero agotador…

Los taxistas no dejarán de sorprenderme, los que se pierden, los que escuchan a Julio Iglesias, los que hacen comentarios obscenos de las chicas que pasan por delante… ¡Coger un taxi es divertidísimo! Aunque suele costar mucho encontrar uno libre que quiera llevarte.

A falta de un buen vino, unos churros con chocolate o un choripan a las tantas de la mañana… Bueno es un dulce no chino y un Sugus a media mañana en el laboratorio con tus compis de labo…
Una lástima perderme San Mateo un año más… Aún así… VIVA SAN MATEO!

Hasta entonces, os dejo con la foto de la bici que me compré por 185¥ (20€ aproximadamente, candado incluido). Le he sacado una foto antes de que se caiga más a pedazos, que pierdo el plástico de los pedales cada dos por tres, jajaja. Pero me da la vida, porque mi labo está un poco lejos de mi casa…

Una vez saciado nuestro apetito, terminamos de dar el paseo, zumo de mango y naranja recién hecho en mano. Una pena no poder sacar fotos del interior de las oficinas, un interior muy cuidado y moderno en el que podemos encontrarnos de todo. Desde un espacio rodeado de televisores con el que navegar por el universo gracias a Google Earth y un joystick de Dios sabe cuántos ejes, hasta un divertidísimo tobogán con el que bajar unos cuantos pisos de forma rápida. Y qué rápida, ¡salí despedido! No faltaron las fotos de rigor junto a los iconos de cada release de Android.

Los trabajadores de Google no sólo pueden disfrutar de deliciosas comidas y snacks (inteligentemente catalogados por colores – verde, amarillo y rojo, como un semáforo – indicando si son sanos o no), sino que además pueden tomar uno de los coches eléctricos que tienen aparcados en cada uno de los edificios para moverse por el campus. Aunque lo más cómodo y habitual es coger una gBike (así supongo yo que las llamarán), bicicleta simple y con los colores corporativos, con la que pedalear hasta donde queramos (ojo, para frenar debemos pedalear hacia atrás).

Abandonamos Google (muy a nuestro pesar, pues es uno de los sitios en los que disfrutamos de wifi gratis por todo el campus) para visitar otro de los grandes, Facebook. Nos acercamos al mostrador en busca de algún tipo de tour guiado por las oficinas de la red social y… nuestro gozo en un pozo. Sin embargo, muy amablemente nos ofrecen tomarnos una foto con el cartelito, una chocolatina y un refresco. ¡Qué majos! Y no me extraña, ya que ahora mismo están en un edificio alquilado a Standford. Están preparando uno mucho más chulo al que mudarse, pero aún les queda una temporadita por el campus de Standford.

Ya que estábamos al lado de Standford, decidimos dar un paseo por allí para ver el campus y recordar dónde dio Steve Jobs uno de sus discursos más conocidos.

Como aún teníamos algo de tiempo, decidimos visitar las oficinas de Linkedin. Nuestro día empezó muy bien, comida y visita exhaustiva a Google, pero, poco a poco fue empeorando… en Linkedin nos dieron con la puerta en las narices, ni refresco ni nada (bueno, un caramelo que le pedimos al segurata de la entrada).

Aun así, la experiencia de visitar Silicon Valey mereció la pena. Una lástima no haber tenido tiempo de visitar las oficinas de Microsoft y Apple que tienen en Cuppertino… y eso que en ambas conseguimos contactos, pero fue demasiado tarde. Bueno, siempre se ha dicho que hay que dejar algo para la próxima, ¿no?

“Forgive enemies, live is too short” and “It’s much better in life to be friendly with enemies” were the first advises he gave us. Taking about the business environment, he stated that India and China are growing 10%, Africa is growing 5-6%, therefore, they are countries to focus on. He thinks more people can help develop more clean energy; there is a mayor concern on global warming and becoming self efficient, good areas to develop a business.

Jon Roskill asked him who he saw for advise once the risk was taken. Richard believes you should take risks but protect the company you built up at the same time. You shouldn’t take a risk that put in risk the whole company: make sure you protect your investment and watch out with the mortage (you don’t wanna loose your house, do you?)

I was amazed when he said that a year from now he’ll be flying to the space with his kid through Virgin Galactic, his new adventure.

His real adventure is starting businesses though. When you start a business, the main challenge is to survive, when you pass the survival barrier, you have to focus on your workers, government, going global… It’s always an adventure. They use their entrepreneurial skills at Virgin to develop new businesses: they set up a new organization and whenever they are sure it can run by itself, they just let it run.

When Jon asked him who he’d like to meet, he said he’d like to meet Jesus Christ and try to make him and some other religious leaders tell the governments they didn’t mean some things the government believe. Richard thinks it would have been nice to meet Cleopatra too (hahaha).

He never though of himself as a business person, the reason he got in the music business was to keep alive the music he loved. Then he started an airline because he wanted better flights… He started those business to solve his problems and everybody’s problems. We all now how a start up should born, it needs to solve a problem.

The 2020 workplace is here now, the future employee will have 10.000 hours gaming experience by the age of 21. How could we engage the future employee with the same spirit?

Three forces are shaping the 2020 workplace: demographics, social web and globalization. If we focus in the US, we can sort the employees by generations:

• Traditionalist: before 1946
• Baby boomer: 1947-1964
• Generation X: 1965-1976
• Millennial: 1977-1997

By the year 2020, 50% of the US workers will be part of the Millennial generation. Generational markers are very different around the world.

Jeanne pointed out that the Indiana State won’t teach handwriting anymore, they’ll use the handwriting lectures’ time to teach typing (personally, I type almost ten times more than I handwrite).
According to her studies, companies are doing social web (87% will use 2.0 tools soon, although 43% of social networking sites used are not supported by the company IT service). They are going social:

1. Social learning

• 5 top benefits: collaboration, p2p learning, knowledge sharing, meet development needs, productivity

• 5 top barriers: security, confusion on usage, culture of firm, pass along wrong data, decreased productivity

2. Using social media

• How: with tools like socialmediagovernance.com

• Why: like Dell, many companies create learning programs and certifications about social media so that their employees get to know what they can and can’t share

• So what: on average, knowledge workers spend 25% of their time searching… Collaborating will save up most of that searching time

3. Globalizing

• Developing a global mindset
• Check out the Thunderbird School of Global Management, the premier school for the MBA in International Business Management.

What are the main innovations?

1. Recruiting is going younger and younger, even before college. It’s also using gaming, like Facebook’s game called My Marriott (similar to Farmville), so that people can see how working at a Marriott looks like

2. Learning will be social and leverage an international social network. Example: uCern network. It’s a way of engaging thru corporate apps and mobile learning. Online mentoring and micro feedback are also really popular

So, what are her predictions for the 2020 workplace?

1. Everyone will have a reputation score including leaders – check out Klout, a company that lets you know your online influence rated between 1 and 100

2. Building game like incentives into non game experiences – like a toothbrush connected thru the wifi that uploads the number of times you brush your teeth, it can become a game just like Foursquare did
